I have been impatiently awaiting the Social Security Office’s release of the Top Baby Names for 2010. While we wait, I thought I would cover baby names that were in the Top 20 in 2009 that I have not previously covered. Since some of them are contenders for the Top 10 in 2010, perhaps this will be a nice preview!

The baby name Alexis is of Greek origin, and it was originally a boy’s name but is now more common for girls. The baby name Alexis made its debut on the charts in 1943 at #828. The baby name peaked at #490 in 1949 and then dropped off the chart altogether in 1964. The next year, the baby name was back and started climbing the chart rapidly, breaking into the Top 500 in 1972, the Top 300 in 1978, and the Top 100 in 1982. The baby name Alexis dropped out of the Top 100 in 1985 through 1987 but has stay in the Top 100 ever since. The baby name was a Top 10 name from 1996 through 2003, peaking at #3 in 1999.
