Friday Funnies: When Your Child Begins Experimenting with Makeup

If you have makeup in the house, eventually your child is going to experiment with it. If your bathroom routine in the morning involves putting on makeup and your toddler watches you, then that experimenting may begin at a very young age. I really do not use much makeup, if I do apply any it is usually mascara and some lip balm. My adopted daughter began asking me to apply mascara to her eyelashes by the tender age of two. Being the overindulging older parent, I complied. I have adult children who are 26 years old and grandchildren the same age as my adopted daughter. Since, for the most part, I am a stay at home parent I have plenty of time to amuse and mentor my cherished toddler. She wants to be with me constantly, and doing exactly what I am doing. While this may have annoyed me a little in my younger days, I cherish the moments now. I was a little surprised when she began expertly applying mascara all by herself a couple of months ago.
My makeup bag does contain some lipstick, rouge, and powder though I very rarely use it. Apparently, my inquisitive daughter was searching through it the other day and came across some red lipstick. Since she uses lip balm all the time she sure new how to open and apply the lipstick. Like most youngsters, she got a little carried away. You can usually tell when a tween or teen has just started using makeup. They tend to wear too much makeup sometimes resembling a clown. Of course, they wear it into public like that, thinking that they look great.
Perhaps my daughter will avoid the embarrassment of sporting a clown face when peer pressure means so much since her experimenting took place at a much younger age. At an age when even she could laugh at her clown face.

Two things made me laugh
Two things made me laugh when I read your blog:
1. Your daughter into your makeup - we have the exactly same issues going on here. Ella has been watching me apply makeup since she was a baby and always wants to wear it. But I have partly resolved the getting into my makeup things by giving her empty cream jars and empty makeup containers (ie. eye shadow) and then she "pretends" to be applying makeup at her vanity table (a great buy for $5 at Big Lots btw).
2. The second thing you wrote that made me laugh was when you said: "Since, for the most part, I am a stay at home parent I have plenty of time to amuse and mentor my cherished toddler." Julia, you are parenting and homeschooling more children than I can keep track of, working part time, being guardian for an infant and basically mentoring her mother, babysitting grandchildren adn taking care of previous foster children's children, remodelling and renting out houses, writing wonderful blogs for the website, and helping anyone in need. I know my list isn't complete!
Bless you Julia.
