Gull Lake Conference

Adoption is an integral part of my life that is never far from my thoughts. I write about adoption daily and seven of my 10 children are adopted. Frequently, questions arise from curious strangers about my family, because there are so many of us. Instead of seeing their questions as an intrusion I usually grab these opportunities to talk about foster care and adoption. So many children in the world need forever families and of course, I am always on the look out for blog material. Even though I was vacationing with my family, I seized a few opportunities to interview people about adoption, their personal experiences, and opinions. Our vacation was at a family camp that brings in awesome speakers for the adult guest. While the adults are enjoying interactive learning with the speakers, the children are off with their counselors swimming, bungee jumping, climbing rock walls, or zipping through the air in a harness.

The speakers for week one at family camp were two missionary families. One missionary family had spent 19 years living in Ethiopia serving with SIM AIDS project and had raised their three children there. Not surprisingly, their three adult children are now serving as missionaries in various countries. The other missionary family was younger, currently serving in India, and raising their four children, ages 1 to 10, there.

My interviews were with these two families, plus a teenager in open adoption. Look forward to reading these interviews as I post them. You may find the interview with the young missionary wife particularly interesting. She shared with me that she was adopted at the age of two, from a Korean orphange, through HOLT, International.
