Bang The Gong For War; McDonald Adoption Ad

There have been a bunch of adoption email lists and forums that are trying to get people whipped up to lynch McDonald's for their negative adoption ad. I really don't understand this reaction. The only thing that I see being slammed (in a negative manner) is the French.

The ad has talking food. And Fries make it clear to everyone that he wasn't French.

And if you are upset you should contact McDonald's directly and share your feelings rather then just posting comments to YouTube and emails lists.

The ad involves talking food. Parfait was determined to win the conversation and pushed Fries. Have you ever been in a conversation with someone who is so determined to win the point..... they keep pushing you... they start pulling out uncommon explanations. And aren't the French people stereotyped as pushy and know-it-alls in America media?

It was pointed out that my theory above has to be wrong, Chicken nuggets, with a rural American accent, is the one who said "maybe you're adopted". Now ads are based on stereotypes and common visual vocabulary. They have to because there is such a short time to get the message across.

This ad is all about Chicken nuggets (not adoption). They (for a short time) are on the $1 menu. So Chicken nuggets has the first and last bits of dialog. To me the Chicken nuggets are the naive, blunt-spoken, rural young male. Or they could have been trying to make Chicken nuggets have a sly sense of humor. What to bet that this ad is aimed at 17-23 year old males?

For anyone who cannot watch the video (due to bandwidth or other reasons), here is my transcript of the ad:

(Scene: McDonald's food in a meeting. They are sitting and talking at a round table)

Chicken nuggets: We're related? Get out. (rural American accent)

Chicken Sandwich: Yeah, third cousins. Too bad you have to leave so soon. (Hispanic accent)

Parfait: You know fries and I are related. (French accent)

Fries: Just because I am French fries doesn't mean we're related Parfait. We look nothing alike. (Common Midwest American accent)

Chicken nuggets: Maybe you’re adopted (rural American accent)

(Long silence)

Chicken nuggets: or not (rural American accent)

It will probably be taken

It will probably be taken off before most of the country hears it, but I don't think it is a big deal.

Didn't bother me

The ad did not bother me. I see much bigger issues in the world that need addressing before this one. :0)
