The baby name Samantha is of English origin and is a feminine form of the baby name Samuel. The television show Bewitched is credited with the baby name’s popularity beginning in the 1960’s.

In 1880, the baby name Samantha ranked #365. The baby name declined in popularity, dropping off the charts altogether from 1903 through 1963 with three exceptions (ranked in the low 900’s in 1907, 1958, and 1959). The launch of the TV show Bewitched did indeed revive the baby name, which came back at #472 in 1964 and jumped to #179 the following year. The baby name continued to skyrocket up the charts, breaking into the Top 100 in 1976 and the Top 50 in 1982.
