Hump Day Hippie: Recycling Videos for Children
Below are some great videos to teach children of various ages about recycling, and the importance of saving energy. Children can sing and dance along, oblivious to the fact that they are actually learning about important issues and reshaping their minds to be environmentally conscious. If nothing else you really have to appreciate the singing trash cans. Seriously when in your life did you expect to see a trash can not only talk but break out into song?
Hump Day Hippie: Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt!
Want to get your kids outside in the fresh autumn air, but aren’t quite sure how to coax them away from the lure of computers, video games and DVD’s? How about having a nature scavenger hunt with them? Kids love finding things, they love games, they love hunting as well as collecting so getting them involved with nature will be a breeze once you make it a mission for them to complete!
Save your egg cartons to use for the hunt, either one per child, or one per team. Then select twelve different items that your children should go out and look for, these can be specific items like a stone, or a twig, or you can get a little more creative by giving your child(ren) categories instead of specific items, like something soft, red, old, delicate, and so forth.
Hump Day Hippie: Make a Pocket Purse
Time for this week’s environmentally friendly activity and it is…(drum roll please) making a Pocket Purse! This one really is more for the mom’s and dad’s of little girls out there, so I promise to keep my eye out for a little something just for the boys in the coming weeks; although I am not too sure how many little girls would get into the Toad Abode!
What You Will Need:
- Old pair of corduroy pants or jeans
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Ribbon or braided rope
- Iron on transfers, paints, patches, or other embellishments
- Velcro strips or snaps
Hump Day Hippie: Environmental Learning, the Technological Way
It would seem as though these days that there is a new high tech way to do just about everything, and that includes learning about the environment as well. Today I stumbled across an article, which was reviewing a video game meant to teach children about ecosystems and the delicate balance of nature. I looked up the website for the game’s manufacturer, Pocketwatch.com; and sure enough they had a free demo (and for the Mac no less) of their game, Wildlife tycoon, Adventure Africa.
Intrigued by the idea of a video game for kids that teaches the basics of balancing an ecosystem, and not willing of course to let all of you down by reviewing a product I had yet to try, I downloaded the demo and began to play. I will admit that for reasons unknown to me, the first two times that I tried to load the game it crashed before I could get the first level loaded, which was pretty annoying. However after shutting down some other programs that were running needlessly in the background, just in case that had anything to do with the crash, we were up and running…off on our African adventure!
Hump Day Hippie: Green Kids Auction
Parents can use Green Kids Auction as a way to get their children involved with recycling, by teaching them the value in reusing and recycling their old items. The children can list their old toys on the website, and when the item is sold the child gets to keep either all of the money, or a portion of the money, with the rest going into a bank account or getting donated to a local charity, however parents wish to handle the financial aspect of the lesson. Selling their old toys will help to teach children to be responsible with their things and to take care of their belongings, as they learn that the better shape the item is in, the more monetary value it retains and the more money they get in their pockets.
Hump Day Hippie: Teaching Cyber Kids About Recycling
Ahhh, kids these days.
How many times have you caught yourself saying that, or something similar as you watch your child play with the latest technology, or have overheard others sighing about how different it is to be a child now, than it was back in the good old days. It is no secret that we are in the age of technology, and that children would much rather spend the day surfing the Internet than playing in the park, however we as parents can use their love of technology and cyber space to teach them about recycling, going green, and protecting our planet in fun and interesting ways that will hold their attention much longer than a lecture will!
Hump Day Hippie: Recycling Your Child's Artwork
So it is pretty much a given that if you have children, you have a stash somewhere in your home, but usually the refrigerator, that is packed full of artwork that your child has created. We all love them, but there comes a time when there simply is no longer enough space for everything that your child has made, yet tossing it into the trash just isn’t an option. So what is a parent to do when faced with such a dire situation? Recycle!
Children’s art works great as wrapping paper!
Hump Day Hippie: Make a Pinecone Bird Feeder

Kids love to feed birds, all different kinds of birds. It doesn’t matter if it is tossing a few slices of bread into a pond to feed the ducks at the park, or tossing some popcorn to the seagulls at the beach, kids always get a kick out of connecting with the nature around them! This little craft will not only keep your little ones entertained while you are making it, but after the fact as well, as they watch the birds enjoy the tasty treat that has been made for them!
Hump Day Hippie: Replace Your Bulbs!
Nope not talking yard work here people, so put your tulips back in the ground and turn your attention inwards and upwards, to the light bulbs inside your home. If you aren’t using compact fluorescent light bulbs than you, my friend, are wasting energy, as well as money! Teaching your kids to be environmentally friendly can be as simple as changing a light bulb, who knew?
Hump Day Hippie: Unplug It!
Before we get into the actual point of this post, there is something that I would like to clarify, as
there seems to be a tad bit of confusion over the name of this series. I am not sure if it is a local saying or not, but where I have grown up Wednesday was always called hump day, as it is the middle of the week, the ‘hump’ to get over before the weekend comes; thus the name of the series. No sexual innuendos here, just getting over the middle of the week!
Now with that out of the way, we move on to the point of today. We live in the age of technology. Everyone has multiple computers, televisions, game systems, you name it and every house is packed with electronic items that need to be plugged in, in order to work.
