Safe Haven Law
Nebraska Safe Haven Law - Child Dumping
Oh mother of God.... The state of Nebraska passed a "Safe Haven" law in July. I really hate these laws because I believe they are band-aids, show pieces. Women in crisis don't need this kind of help. Dead and abandonded babies continue to be found in states with "Safe Haven" laws.
''Safe haven laws, though rooted in magnanimity, have not proven to be effective because they are not designed in such a way that will affect the decisions and actions of those most likely to discard infants," Krall wrote in a recent report, titled ''Discarded Infants and Neonaticide."
Nebraska really screwed up. Their "Safe Haven" law allows any child (anyone under 19 years of age) to be dropped off at a hospital.
Insurance Company Weighs In On Birthmothers
OK, I'm really not sure what to make of this one.
Into my e-mail box today popped a Google Alert that seemed to be about a teenage birthmother who was trying to use a safe haven law to place her baby for adoption. Except that when I clicked through on the link, it took me to a Web site owned by the insurance company Liberty Mutual.
Dubbed "The Responsibility Project", the Web site apparently grew out of a television commercial that Liberty Mutual did about people who did the right thing.
We believe that the more people think and talk about responsibility, and even debate what it means, the more it can affect how we live our daily lives. And perhaps, in this small way, together, we can make the world just a little better.
Adoption News: Editorials Against N.J., Minnesota Open Records Bills
The largest circulation newspaper in New Jersey is calling on state legislators to reject a bill to open sealed adoption records. The Star Ledger takes issue with most of the arguments that the bill's backers have used to advance it, from adoptee rights to the need for medical histories. "Changing the law retroactively," it concludes, "is just plain wrong". The bill (S611) passed the New Jersey Senate earlier this week and now goes to the state's Assembly. The Minneapolis Star Tribune has written an editorial against a similar bill pending in Minnesota.
